Joaquin Ayala Talks About Las Vegas Magic

With the all of the changes and closures to the Las Vegas magic scene, Joaquin Ayala provides some timely and insightful opinions. Ayala is the first magician featured in this series who has actually spoken with Lance Burton since he announced that his show will close this year.
What is the state of Las Vegas magic? Is the magic in Las Vegas changed?,
Yes, it has definitely changed...
In my opinion, the popularity of magic these days is low. People would rather see a great concert, Broadway play or Cirque Du Soleil type show. Acts in review shows are gone and even review shows are gone from the strip. It feels so different. We are living in a different period of Las Vegas entertainment and it's not the same.
People are tired of the old magic shows. Nowadays, magic is predictable. You pull a box or a cage or cover a big scaffolding with a big curtain and people start commenting and sometimes even screaming before the effect happens...a girl! A tiger! An airplane! I have been in the audience or backstage when people do that.
So, this means that the old presentations don't work anymore. Audiences can see the effects coming and the element of surprise is gone. They wish to see something different but it is not...just a prop or a piece of furniture (perfect description of one of my props by Otto Wesley) - a big piece of cloth in front of a big piece of black art and PUFF! magic happens! It's sooooo predictable.
The future is in doing a new approach to our art: new ways to communicate with the audience and not relaying the magic effect. It's the style, the personality and the passionate performer on stage. That's the key! I hope someone does it soon!
Any thoughts on Lance Burton's next projects/gigs?
He is one of those guys with style, great charm and outstanding personality. These kinds of guys are born with that talent. Sorry, but you cannot buy this in the drugstore. You are born with it and Lance is the perfect example.
Lance hasn't said yet what he is going to do after his contract at the Monte Carlo is over, but during a conversation that I had with him a few weeks ago, he gave me the impression that he would like to retire, enjoy life with his family of magical friends and travel the world. He deserves that as he is an icon. And besides being one of the great performers of our time, he is a wonderful, humble, considerate and giving person...
I want to be like him...
Imagina que estas frente a una gran escalera...esta junto a ti esa persona que es importante para ti..(novio/a, esposo/a, amigo/a etc)...y están fuertemente tomados de la mano... Mientras están en el mismo nivel..todo está perfecto...es disfrutable. Pero de pronto..tu subes un escalón...pero esa persona no...esa persona prefiere mantenerse en el nivel inicial...ok..no hay problema..es fácil aun así estar tomados de las manos... Pero tu subes un escalón mas...y esa persona se niega a hacerlo..ya las manos han empezado a estirarse y ya no es tan cómodo como al principio...subes un escalón mas...y ya el tirón es fuerte..ya no es disfrutable y empiezas a sentir que te frena en tu avance...pero tú quieres que esa persona suba contigo para no perderla... Desafortunadamente para esa persona no ha llegado el momento de subir de nivel...así que se mantiene en su posición inicial...subes un escalón mas...y ya ahi si es muy dificil mantenerte unido...te duele..y mucho...luchas entre tu deseo de que esa persona suba...de no perderla...pero tu ya no puedes ni quieres bajar de nivel.... En un nuevo movimiento hacia arriba....viene lo inevitable...y se sueltan de las manos...puedes quedarte ahi y llorar y patalear tratando de convencerle de que te siga..que te acompañe...puedes incluso ir contra todo tu ser y tu mismo/a bajar de nivel con tal de no perderle..pero despues de esa ruptura en el lazo..ya nada es igual....así que por mas doloroso y dificíl que sea..entiendes que no puedes hacer mas..mas que seguir avanzando..y esperar que algun dia..vuelvan a estar al mismo nivel.
Eso pasa cuando inicias tu camino de crecimiento interior...en ese proceso..en ese avance pierdes muchas cosas: pareja..amigos..trabajos..pertenencias...todo lo que ya no coincide con quien te estas convirtiendo ni puede estar en el nivel al que estas accesando... Puedes pelearte con la vida entera..pero el proceso asi es. El crecimiento personal es eso..personal..individual..no en grupo...puede ser que despues de un tiempo esa persona decida emprender su propio camino y te alcance o suba incluso mucho mas que tu...pero es importante que estes consciente de que no se puede forzar nada en esta vida. Llega un momento...en tu escalera hacia convertirte en una mejor persona...en que puedes quedarte solo/a un tiempo...y duele..claro que duele..y mucho...pero luego, conforme vas avanzando..te vas encontrando en esos niveles con personas mucho mas afines a ti..personas que gracias a su propio proceso...estan en el mismo nivel que tu y que si tu sigues avanzando..ellos tambien.. En esos niveles de avance ya no hay dolor..ni apego..ni sufrimiento...hay amor...comprension..respeto absoluto... Asi es nuestra vida amigos/as...una infinita escalera...donde estarás con las personas que esten en el mismo nivel que tu...y si alguien cambia...la estructura se acomoda. Me costó mucho soltarme...aun despues de una fuerte ruptura seguia viendo para atras....esperando un milagro...y el milagro apareció...pero no de la manera en que yo hubiera supuesto...apareció bajo otros nombres..otros cuerpos..otras actividades....perdí a una amiga..y gané a 20 mas....perdí un mal trabajo y ahora tengo un excelente trabajo y con oportunidades de tener mas de lo que soñé alguna vez....perdí un auto que no me gustaba y ahora manejo el auto de mis sueños...perdí a un hombre al que creí amar...para darme cuenta que ahora lo que tengo en este momento de mi vida...ni siquiera podía soñarlo hace unos cuantos meses.... Cada perdida...cada cosa que sale..es porque asi tiene que ser...dejales ir..y préparate para todo lo bueno que viene a tu vida...tu sigue avanzando y confia...porque esta escalera es mágica y si no me crees...porque no lo compruebas por ti mismo/a?

My friend Franz Harary invited me to attend the Jabawockeez in concert at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
All I can say is WOW ! what a talent !
They showed their trade mark by playing the old fashion theater trick of adopting different characters by using plain masks.
The most important…all this group that emerged from the famous TV show ABDC…are mostly down to earth and super humble nice people from Philippines and Asia.
Costumes designed and build by Kara Saun made their look very unique and, in combination of sampling old tunes with new rhythms made the audience go crazy.
The show was directed by Nappytabs (Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo)
Choreograph and stage by Jabbawockeez : Benjamin Chung, Christopher Gatdula, Jeffrey Nguyen, Joseph Larot, Kevin Brewer, Philippe Tayag and Rynan Paguio

Todo lo que puedo decir es: WOW…que talento !
Bailarines actuando y usando el viejo truco de usar mascaras para adoptar diferentes personajes hicieron desde un principio su marca original.
Lo mas importante es que todo este grupo que nacio del famoso show de TV ABDC son la mayoria de las Filipinas y Asia….muy humildes y on los pies sobre la tierra.
Los vestuarios disenados y construidos por Kara Saun hacen que su estilo sea unico en combinacion con la mezcla de musica antigua y ritmos modernos de rapping…con todo esto la gente estallo en aplausos al final del show.

Bruce Gold was a breath of fresh air by doing 10 min of his original comedy.
Sorry but I can’t hold my feelings and thoughts…but untalented people for more that they try and try and try to make it in this business…they are not going to reach the top.
Why a broken foot or early opening it’s always an excuse? Take off until you heal your wounds or rehearse , rehearse , rehearse until is perfect then….open !!!
May I’m harsh but I truly believe that magic is a performing art that moves feelings by great talent skill, awesome style, great charm on stage and original material that entertains.
I firmly believe that great talent always is discovered somehow or when that “once in a lifetime opportunity” arrives….your talent make you rise to the stars.

Perdon por sonar rudo pero no puedo guardar mis sentimientos y lo que pienso pero, personas no talentosas por mas que traten y traten de hacerla en este negocio , nunca llegaran a la cima.
Porque un pie roto o un debut temprano son escusas?
Entonces no debutes hasta que te alivies y hasta que despues de ensayar y ensayar…el show sea perfecto!!!
Tal vez soy muy duro en mis opiniones pero realmente creo que la magia como arte tiene que mover los sentimientos al mostrar una habilidad excepcional, un estilo unico, en convinacion de un charisma personal y material original que entretenga.
Siempre he creido que un artista con talento siempre va a ser descubierto de alguna manera o por alguien y cuando llega esa “oportunidad de tu vida” ….ese talento florece en todo su splendor y le permite subir a las estrellas.
I can not believe that my baby , Nadia…she just graduated as “Clinical Laboratory Scientist”.
The graduation ceremony was held at The Thomas and Mac Center of Las Vegas.
Nadia after working for 2 years as a tour guide at the Luxor Hotel for the exhibition “Bodies” and at the Saint Rose Hospital in Las Vegas …will be working at the laboratory department of the Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas.
Congratulations Nadia …I feel very proud of you !!!

La ceremonia de graducion fue realizada en el Thomas and Mac Center de Las Vegas, Nadia despues de trabajar por 2 anos como guia en el Hotel y Casino Luxor en la exhibicion “Bodies” y en el Hospital Saint Rose…proximamente ingresara en el departamento del laboratorio en el Hospital Sunrise Las Vegas.

A Chinese company started negotiations with Ayala EFX to bring the show Magical Passion to Henan China. After rushing information with them, my crew, my cast and setting up all cargo arrangements.
We waist our time!
Negociaciones Frustrantes.
Una compania China comenzo hace algunas semanas las negociaciones con Ayala EFX para llevar a Henan China nuestro show Magical Passion. Despues de haber mandado de ultima hora todo tipo de informacion, arreglar informacion con my personal , assistentes , bailarines y recabar informacion y confirmaciones con mi propia compania de carga.
Perdimos nuestro tiempo !
The Chinese Company never committed to their word, deposits were not confirmed, Hotel name and information was never release and immigration and cargo paperwork was never arranged…
We ended up decided to cancel all of this last minute frustrating negotiations.
La compania china nunca cumplio su palabra, los depositos bancarios nunca fueron confirmados, la informacion y el nombre del Hotel nunca fue recibida y la documentacion de inmigracion y cargo nunca fue arreglada.
Al final decidimos cancelar todas estas frustrantes negociaciones de ultima hora.
My experience tells me that this people didn’t have any clue of what they were doing, not professional and myself as the main person responsible for all my cast… I got the feeling that something that started wrong will end worse. So I didn’t want to jeopardize my people and our cargo equipment by wondering in a different country.
I really hope that all the other people that they are going, get paid.
Mi experiencia me ha ensenado que este tipo de personas no tienen la menor idea de lo que estan haciendo, no son profesionales y yo como responsable de toda mi gente no puedo llevarlos a la boca del lobo….algo que me dio mala espina al principio iba a finalizar muy mal. Por eso decidi cancelar y no arriesgar a mi gente y todo mi equipo en un pais diferente al nuestro.
Realmente espero que les pagen y cumplan a todas aquellas personas que asistiran.

Me... photo by Franz HararyAmerica’s Best Dance Crew is the name of one of the most popular TV show today. Franz Harary approached me to co-design and built the special effects for one of the last episodes of the show.
After a month of hard work on getting back and forth information on the designs (while Franz was in London) and starting construction, we reached our death line and along with Franz, Kara Saun (ABDC Costume designer) and my assistant Charles Denny we ended up at Warner Brothers in Hollywood, we ended up setting the effects for the show. The show aired on MTV on March 25th.
Despues de todo un mes dedicado a un intenso trabajo en mandar informacion de disenos (mientras Franz estaba en Londres) y comenzar la construccion, respetamos nuestra fecha limite y junto con mi asistente Charles Denny y Kara Saun (la disenadora del vestuario para ABDC) terminamos en los estudios de Warner Brothers en Hollywood montando y practicando los efectos para el show.
El show salio al aire en MTV el 25 de Marzo.
Johnny Tompson aka The Great Tomsoni filmed at the Magic Castle in Hollywood a DVD of his act and a very interesting interview with Max Maven. Tanya and I we were attending the live show and the interview and we can tell you to keep your eyes open for the release of this new DVD, it has great funny stories and great information about those great days in show business. We love Johnny and Pam and we wish them to live with us forever. They are one of those true funny artists alive today.

Jersey Boys es una biografia muy emocional y teatral de la carrera dentro del mundo del espectaculo de Frankie Valli y The Four Seasons. Esta obra esta dirigida por Des McAnuff basada en la novela de Marshall Brickman y Rick Elice. Rick Faugno realiza el papel de Frankie Valli y la banda de Four seasons esta compuesta por: Deven May, Peter Saide, Jeff leibow y John Salvatore.
es la autobiografia de Reynaldo Arenas , un escritor cubano exiliado a los Estados Unidos con los "Marielitos" en 1980 y cuenta como fue preso por escribir contra las infamias en Cuba y por la represion de homosexuales en su pais...sus libros fueron publicados en el extranjero principalmente en Francia, por el cual fue aprisionado y sometido a las torturas de la prision "El Morro" de Cuba por una ano. La pelicuala esta muy bien dirigida por un pintor/director de Cine llamado Julian Schwebel.
As a young man, Arenas (Javier Bardem) is singled out by his teachers and encouraged to further his skills as a writer -- no easy task, considering the Castro regime's censorship of any work considered to be subversive or anti-authoritarian. Still, the author manages to smuggle his work out of the country through friends, who arrange for one of his novels to be published in France. Not only persecuted for his creative beliefs, the openly gay Arenas is jailed on a bogus sex charge; he escapes internment only to be captured and persecuted later for his contraband dispatches. In 1980, Arenas is finally allowed to leave Cuba for the United States, where he achieves freedom of expression but not prosperity.
